WHAT is a Slot Canyon?
A slot canyon is a narrow canyon, formed by the wear of water rushing through rock (typically sandstone and limestone). A slot canyon is significantly deeper than it is wide. Some slot canyons can measure less than 1 meter (3 ft) across at the top but drop more than 30 meter (100 ft) to the floor of the canyon.
Is this slot canyon the same as Antelope Canyon?
While part of the Antelope Canyon system, this particular canyon is separate from Upper or Lower Antelope Canyons. This canyon, called "Secret Antelope Canyon", is located approximately 4-5 miles from Upper and Lower Antelope Canyons. It is similar in many ways and is just as beautiful ...but without the crowds.
slot canyon vs. antelope canyon
While thinking about the average slot canyon vs. antelope canyon, consider this: secret antelope canyon is similar in many ways and is just as beautiful ... but without the crowds.
DO YOU offer TOURS TO Upper and Lower ANTELOPE CANYONs?
Not currently. Our tours are only into Secret Antelope Canyon as well as the Horseshoe Bend Overlook.
What is the best time to see horseshoe bend for photos?
The best time to see horseshoe bend is up to you and what you’re looking for. The canyon light is beautiful during all parts of the day. It tends to be more yellow, orange, and bright in the morning and more red and magenta in the afternoon.
CAN I bring a TRIPOD?
Yes. You are welcome to bring a tripod. All our tours are "photographer friendly". We simply ask that you respect the other guests on the tour by allowing traffic to flow through the many narrow parts of the canyon without obstruction.
Can i bring a drone?
No. The Navajo Parks and Recreation do not allow drones to be flown in these sensitive areas.
Will i see light beams?
Probably not. They only occur in this canyon during short periods of spring and fall and only last approximately 30 minutes during the late morning. They are very tricky to photograph and most of the photos you see of them are a result of long exposure times while throwing sand in the light shaft.
DO I NEED A RESERVATION?
Yes. It is recommended that you book your antelope canyon tour reservation at least a week in advance due to our commitment to small group sizes. However, we’ll do our best to accommodate same-day bookings.
DO YOU TAKE WALK-INS?
Yes. If you are visiting during the off-season (Nov to Feb) your odds are good. If you are visiting us in-season (Mar to Oct) your odds are tough. We keep each tour to groups of 24 guests or less so seats often sell out. Ultimately, antelope canyon tour reservations are recommended year-round.
CAN I GO TO the SLOT CANYON BY MYSELF?
No. Unlike the Overlook at Horseshoe Bend, all of the slot canyons within the Antelope Canyon system are protected by the Navajo Parks and Recreation and are only accessible with a guide. Safety and vandalism prevention are the main reasons guests are required to have a guided tour.
CAN YOU LEAVE ME IN THE CANYON?
No. In 2003, tour companies were given strict guidelines from the Navajo Parks and Recreation to have a guide present at all times with visitors. There are no self-guided hikes into any of the Antelope Canyons, it is completely restricted to tours only.
WHAT’S YOUR CANCELLATION POLICY?
All cancellations prior to 3 days (72 hours) of your scheduled tour date are 100% refundable.
NO REFUNDS will be issued for cancellations within 3 days (72 hours) of your scheduled tour time. Regretfully, illness, fear of COVID, forgotten reservations, misjudging travel times, traffic, and other emergencies do not affect this strict policy. We're sorry!
If you must miss your reservation, you may send anyone in your place. Refunds will not be issued for “no-shows”. Missed tours cannot be rescheduled.
Tours rescheduled within 3 days (72 hours) of your tour are subject to additional fees and are non-refundable if cancelled at a later date.
Tours may be cancelled due to bad weather, in which case a full refund will always be issued.
Failure to check in prior to 15 minutes of your scheduled departure time may result in your seat(s) being sold to someone else. Planning for additional travel time is recommended.
ARE THERE LADDERS IN the SLOT CANYON?
No. The floor in Secret Antelope Canyon is fairly level. The short nature walk to the mouth of the canyon has some gradual incline and decline but most people can manage without any issues.
CAN I BRING A BACKPACK?
Yes. Small backpacks (day packs) are permitted, but large backpacks are not. With the canyon being narrow in some sections and with multiple people wearing Large backpacks it not only scratches the canyon walls but can hit other people inside the canyon as well.
CAN I bring food or drinks?
Yes. We encourage you to bring plenty of water. We have a filtered water fill station in our office for your convenience. Please bring along whatever else you may need. While we have no restrictions on food, alcohol is strictly prohibited on any portion of our tours.
Are restrooms accessible during the tour?
No. Restroom facilities are not available during our tours. We recommend you use the facilities prior to boarding the tour truck. We will be traveling through primitive, natural landscapes. If you have the urgent need to go during the tour, our guides will be happy to point you in the direction of a large bush to stand or squat behind.
WILL I GET SAND or dust ON ME?
It's possible that you will get sand or dust on yourself. We will be traveling through the desert and the canyon has a sandy floor - a gust of wind can get dust moving. If you are sensitive to dust you may want to bring a mask/bandanna and sunglasses.
WHAT should i wear?
During winter months, we recommend warm clothing. You will likely be in an open-air tour truck and traveling up to 40 MPH for the first 5 minutes. It can feel frigid. Layering is always a good idea. The summer season can be very warm and a t-shirt and shorts are most common. Closed toe shoes are preferred but sandals are fine too as long as you're comfortable with sand between your toes.
IS THE WALK DIFFICULT?
No. The walk is a level 1/4 mile in and the same 1/4 mile back out. We compare it to a walk on a sandy beach - overall very low difficulty.
CAN I BRING INFANTS AND YOUNG CHILDREN?
No. We will be traveling across some bumpy terrain to access the slot canyon. We limit our tours to age 6 years and older for safety reasons.
CAN I JOIN THE TOUR if i'm pregnant?
Please follow your doctor's orders. For safety reasons associated with driving through some bumpy and rough terrain in order to access the canyon, we highly discourage pregnant women from participating. Ultimately it's your decision.
CAN I BRING a service DOG?
No. The unalterable nature of our tours simply causes concern for a dog’s safety. Our tours are operated on open-air tour trucks with no doors, panels or side rails. The trip also includes travel on both highway and bumpy terrain and windy dirt roads. We consider this unsafe for anyone (including a service dog) not properly secured by a seatbelt.
WHAT TIME IS IT AT OUR LOCATION?
We operate on Mountain Standard Time which is the same time zone as our local community of Page, AZ. While the rest of the Navajo Nation operates on Mountain Daylight Time, we choose to operate our tour schedules in sync with where most of our guests are staying in Page, AZ.
Please visit https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/usa/phoenix if you want to know the local time. Please keep in mind that Arizona (outside of the Navajo Nation) does NOT observe Daylight Savings.
WHAT TIME should I arrive for my tour?
We recommend arriving at least 20 minutes prior to your scheduled departure time.
Do I need to tip my tour guide?
Tips are always appreciated. We ultimately hope to provide an amazing experience that is worthy of a tip.
May I scatter Cremated ashes in the canyon?
Out of respect for our Navajo culture, guests are NOT allowed to bring or release cremated ashes in any of the slot canyons.
